FAQs About Xeriscaping Amarillo, TX

Do you have questions regarding our xeriscaping service? Amarillo, TX landscapers aim to answer all your burning questions in our FAQ section below. Whether you’re curious about the benefits of xeriscaping or which plants we can add to your landscape, our landscapers have the answers.

  • The primary goal of xeriscaping in Amarillo, TX is to create a water-conserving landscape that has considerable aesthetic appeal and is as low-maintenance as possible. Some of the strategies that are employed to accomplish this include:

Water conservation methods: Using irrigation systems, drought-resistant plants, and soil improvement techniques, xeriscaping aims to minimize water use.
A focus on sustainability: Preserving natural resources and supporting biodiversity. When you xeriscape your lawn, you’ll have a more sustainable garden area.
Low maintenance features: Plants that require less upkeep, maintenance and monitoring are used to create a low-maintenance Eden.
Enhanced aesthetic appeal: By using a variety of designs, types and colors of drought-tolerant plants, xeriscaping ensures a gorgeous result.

  • Your lawn can save 50-75% on water use compared to yards without xeriscaping. Some sources even report water savings of up to 80%.

  • Lawns with xeriscaping require significantly less maintenance than other landscapes. They do still require light maintenance, however, such as:

Ensuring irrigation systems are working well
    Weeding by hand
Pruning plants, blossoms and shrubbery when needed
    Ensuring optimal soil quality
    Winterizing your irrigation systems

For more tips and tricks on xeriscaping maintenance, feel free to contact us today. We’ll ensure you’re all set following your new landscape design and answer any questions you may have.

  • There are significant differences between zero-scaping and xeriscaping. While both of these methods aim to conserve water, zero-scaping is mostly made up of rocks with little to no vegetation. It uses rocks, gravel, cement and other hardscaping features to create an outdoor space that requires minimal to no maintenance. Xeriscaping, on the other hand, uses water-conservation methods such as irrigation, drainage and drought-tolerant plants to save water while creating an attractive garden. Rather than eliminating water entirely, xeriscaping minimizes water use while maintaining gorgeous plants and blossoms.

  • No, and Texas law backs that up. Under Texas Property Code Section 202.007, an HOA can’t ban drought-resistant landscaping or water-conserving turf, and any deed restriction that attempts to do so is void. Your association can still set reasonable rules on layout, plant height, and hardscape placement, so a design that blends xeric beds with a strip or two of traditional turf usually clears review faster than tearing out the whole yard at once. Many established Amarillo neighborhoods with an HOA still require a design submission before work begins. Get your plant list and site plan in early, and you’ll skip weeks of back-and-forth.

  • Buffalo grass, blue grama, blackfoot daisy, and Gregg’s mistflower do well here because they tolerate both Amarillo’s Zone 7a winters and the caliche layer sitting under most Panhandle clay. Roses, hostas, and other moisture-hungry imports tend to struggle no matter how much you water them. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension recommends amending caliche-heavy beds with expanded shale or coarse compost rather than sand, since sand can pack the caliche tighter and further choke drainage. Raised beds solve most caliche problems outright, letting roots establish above the crust instead of fighting through it.

  • Amarillo draws water from Lake Meredith and the Ogallala Aquifer through the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority, and both sources have tightened to the point that the city’s 2019 Drought Contingency Plan can trigger mandatory outdoor watering limits on short notice. In 2022, the city asked residents to cut lawn watering for the first time in a decade after reservoir levels dropped. Traditional turf took the hit. Established xeriscaping needs a fraction of that water, so it typically keeps running fine under Stage 1 or Stage 2 limits. We usually set up a temporary hand-watering plan for the first two summers, since new plantings need more moisture than a mature xeriscape until any restrictions apply.

  • It does. Amarillo averages one of the highest wind speeds in Texas, historically around 13.5 mph a year according to NOAA climate data, with March and April bringing the strongest gusts. That wind pulls moisture out of soil and leaves fast, so loose mulch alone doesn’t hold up the way it might in calmer climates. Heavier shredded hardwood or rock mulch, paired with low windbreak plantings like fragrant sumac on the windward side, helps retain soil moisture and prevents topsoil from blowing off freshly planted beds. Skip this step, and you’ll be replacing mulch every few months instead of once a year.

  • Early fall, roughly September through mid-October, gives xeriscaping in Amarillo the strongest start. Soil is still warm enough for root establishment, and the worst of the summer heat and wind has passed. Spring works too, but wait until after the average mid-April last frost to protect tender natives from a late freeze. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s Panhandle programs note that fall-planted natives typically need 30 to 40% less supplemental water the following summer than spring-planted ones, since they’ve had a full season to root before the heat sets in.
