Lawn Fertilizer Services for Greenville, SC Homes

  • Seasonal Lawn Fertilization

We set every application by grass type, using slow-release nitrogen plus phosphorus and potassium where the soil calls for it. Centipede gets a lighter hand, since too much nitrogen thins it out.

  • Soil Testing and pH Correction

A soil test tells us where your pH and nutrient levels actually sit. From there, we can add lime to bring the pH back into range and adjust the fertilizer blend.

  • Tree and Shrub Fertilization

Newly planted trees and shrubs need help building roots. We feed them with root-focused fertilizer that helps them settle and bounce back after pruning. Established plantings get seasonal feedings to keep their color and growth steady year after year.

Why Greenville Homeowners Choose The Grounds Guys

Every spring, someone in Simpsonville or Five Forks spreads a full bag of nitrogen in March while the Bermuda is still half asleep. The grass can’t use it yet, so most of it runs off in the spring rain, and by May they’re buying another bag. Our program avoids that by matching each visit to your grass and the season, not a big-box store calendar. Sometimes that means telling you to wait two more weeks. We’d rather do that than sell you an application your lawn can’t use yet.

We’re locally owned and operated out of our office at 250 Enterprise Drive in Powdersville, and we’re members of the National Association of Landscape Professionals. You get upfront pricing and a scheduled appointment time, so you aren’t stuck at home waiting on a truck. Estimates are free.

Fertilizer only works if the lawn can use it, and that’s where the rest of our services come in. If your sprinklers miss half the yard, our irrigation repair crew can fix broken heads and dead zones. Bare, worn-out sections may need sod installation before a feeding program will pay off. Water pooling after every storm? Our drainage work fixes that at the source. One company, one plan for the whole yard.

Lawn Fertilization FAQs for Greenville, SC Homeowners

  • It depends on your grass. Bermuda, zoysia, and centipede are warm-season grasses that wake up slowly in the Upstate, and Clemson Extension advises holding off on nitrogen until early to mid-May, once they’re actively growing. Feed any earlier and much of it washes away before the roots can take it up. Tall fescue is different. It grows hardest in cool weather, so its main feedings land between September and November, with a light one allowed up to mid-March. We follow those windows for every lawn we treat.

  • Bermuda is the hungriest grass in the area and usually gets three or four feedings between May and August. Zoysia needs a bit less. Centipede wants the least of all, often just one or two light feedings, because heavy nitrogen leads to thin turf and dieback (a problem called centipede decline). Fescue lawns get most of their fertilizer in the fall. We’ll recommend a schedule after we’ve seen your yard.

  • Color usually shows up first. A warm-season lawn that’s actively growing tends to green up within one to two weeks of a feeding. Thicker turf takes longer, generally a full season of well-timed applications, because the grass has to fill in thin spots and spread on its own. Greenville lawns that start the program in fall often look noticeably better by the following June.

  • Three main nutrients do most of the work. Nitrogen drives green color and leaf growth. Phosphorus supports root development, which matters most for new sod and seed. Potassium helps grass hold up through drought and summer heat. We use controlled-release blends so the lawn gets a steady supply over several weeks instead of one big surge, and we adjust the ratio based on your grass type and soil test.

  • For Bermuda and zoysia, yes. Summer is their peak growing season, and they’ll use a feeding well through July. We usually wrap up warm-season applications by late summer so the grass can slow down before fall. Tall fescue is the exception. Feeding it in July heat stresses the turf when it’s already struggling, so we hold off until temperatures drop in September.

  • Granular fertilizer generally needs about a quarter inch of water within a day or two to move down into the soil. Liquid feedings work differently. Part of the product is absorbed through the leaf, so it needs a few hours to dry before rain or sprinklers hit it. We’ll leave instructions after each visit, so you know which one you’ve got.

  • We’ll tell you what went down and when it’s okay to use the lawn again. For most treatments, that means keeping kids and pets off until the product has dried or been watered in, usually a few hours. Got a dog that’s outside all day? Mention it when you book, and we’ll plan around it.

  • Yes, once it’s rooted. Fresh sod needs a few weeks to knit into the soil before its first feeding, and fertilizing too soon can burn the new roots. If we installed it, we’ll put it on the schedule at the right time. If someone else did, we’ll check the rooting before we treat.

  • We do. Our crews treat lawns in Simpsonville, Greer, Five Forks, Powdersville, Taylors, Mauldin, and Easley, along with Greenville itself. Not sure you’re in range? Call with your address, and we’ll let you know.

  • Contact The Grounds Guys of Greenville, SC. We’ll identify your grass type, look at your soil, and give you an upfront price on a fertilization plan for the year. October is prime time to feed fescue and get a soil test done before winter, so the sooner you book, the better.
