Is your current lawn struggling? It might be time to start from scratch with sod installation. Adding sod, or pre-grown grass, to your property will immediately renew your lawn. You'll enjoy a lush, healthy, green lawn instead of scraggly yellow grass or bald patches.

Sod is also an excellent choice if you are moving into a new-build home without an existing lawn.

Mulch Installation

Adding mulch can be one of the best things you can do for your garden and trees. Mulch helps your soil retain moisture, suppresses weeds, and positively contributes to the overall health of your soil. Well-placed mulch can also add significant beauty and personality to your lawn, and it comes in many forms, from organic substances like wood chips to inorganic substances like colored rubber chips.

Sod Services FAQ

How do you prepare for sod installation?

Prior preparation before installation allows your lawn the best chance of sod success. Here are a few crucial steps to complete before your installation day:

  • Clear your lawn of all debris, like branches, rocks, buried stumps, and more.
  • Grade your lawn if needed by softening severe slopes and filling in low-lying areas.
  • Till your soil to at least two inches of depth to get rid of weeds, break up compact soil, and improve the flow of nutrients into the soil.
  • Add topsoil, roughly four to six inches, to your lawn.
  • Test soil pH using a pH kit. Your new sod will do best in slightly acidic soils with a pH around 6.5. If your soil is too acidic or too alkaline, you’ll need to add amendments.
  • Fertilize your soil.
  • Roll your soil if your soil is loose. Use a lawn roller to settle your soil.

If preparing your lawn for sod installation seems like a lot of work, contact The Grounds Guys, as we'll be more than happy to help with any steps listed above.

Why is sod installation good for my landscape?

Sod installation is a fast and effective way to establish a new and healthy lawn. Instead of reseeding and waiting weeks for your fresh grass to grow, sod will give you a lush lawn overnight. You just need to make sure to care for your sod correctly, or it could fail to root and thrive.

How often does sod require maintenance services?

Once fully established, sod will do best with a typical lawn maintenance schedule. That schedule will depend on the season but usually entails weekly mowing in the summer, fall, and spring, fertilization in the fall and spring, regular watering depending on the season and weather, and seasonal cleanups in the spring and fall.

Newly installed sod requires specialized care to ensure that it takes root in your yard. You’ll want to immediately water your sod after installation and then continue to water your lawn twice a day for the next two weeks.

After a few weeks, your sod should take root, and you can prejudice your watering schedule. You can begin mowing your sod within one or two weeks after installation, but avoid using a riding mower, as it could tear up new sod. You’ll also want to fertilize newly installed sod three or four times between the spring and fall seasons.
