Fresh sod requires a different type of maintenance routine when compared to that of a traditional lawn. You’ll want to avoid creating perfect mow lines or having a picnic on your new line. The following steps can help you ensure your fresh sod lawn is healthy and attractive:

Week One

  • Do not overwater your sod, but don’t allow the sod to dry out completely. Water your sod three to four times a day for five to ten minutes each time.
  • Avoid watering your sod in the evening. Make sure all of your water gets down before sundown.
  • Don’t walk on your new sod lawn for the first two weeks. Foot traffic is not good for fresh sod.

Week Two

  • Water your sod lawn for 30 minutes each day. It’s fine to split up your time into two 15-minute sessions.

Week Three & Beyond

  • Once your new sod lawn is three weeks old, it’s time to start mowing it. Be sure to keep the mower deck high. Don’t mow more than one-third of the length of your grass blades.
  • After your sod lawn is six weeks old, you can begin to fertilize it.
