So, you’re new to town? Welcome! We’re glad you decided to call West Texas home. Abilene is a great place to live, work, study, and raise a family! There’s something for everyone here.

Welcome to Abilene!

Abilene is located on Interstate 20, 150 miles west of Fort Worth in beautiful West Texas. The town was initially founded as a stock shipping point on the Texas Pacific Railway and became home to Dyess Air Force Base in 1942.

Two public school districts serve local families! Abilene Independent School District and Wylie Independent School District support student excellence across over 30 campuses.

Abilene is also home to seven colleges! Students seeking postsecondary studies can choose from Abilene Commercial College, Cisco College, TSTC West Texas, TTU Health Sciences Center. Abilene Christian University, Hardin-Simmons University, McMurry University.

Abilene’s Best Places to Eat

You can find most of your favorite chain restaurants like Arby’s, McDonalds, Chick-Fil-A, Buffalo Wild Wings, Chili’s, Cotton Patch Café, and Firehouse Subs. These are great if you’re looking for a quick, convenient bite, but don’t just limit yourself to the basics! Abilene has great local restaurants as well.

  • The Paramount Theatre – This venue was fully restored in 1986 and shows films, concerts, musical productions, operas, dance recitals and hosts private parties.
  • Fort Phantom Hill – Tour one of the best preserved historic sites in Texas to understand daily life and typical hardships for early Texans.
  • Adventure Cove Aquatic Center – Enjoy a fun-filled day swimming, riding waterslides, and relaxing in the lazy river!

  • Philharmonic Orchestra – This organization has been supporting music exposure and education in Abilene since 1950. The orchestra invites guest performers and draws audiences from all over the state.
  • Swenson House Tours – Originally built in 1910, this gorgeous home has been expertly restored and is available for rental as an event venue.
