Winter lawn care can be time consuming, but when spring brings new growth you’ll be grateful for an easy to care for lawn. By taking the time to ensure your lawn is prepared for the winter you will ensure less maintenance in the spring.
· After overseeding in late summer or early fall, administer a potassium rich fertilizer that will strengthen your lawn for the winter.
· If your weather is exceptionally dry, a final heavy watering will help ensure there is plenty of moisture in the soil.
· Avoid walking on your frozen lawn or using it as additional parking as this can cause considerable damage.
· To help keep people out of your grass, try staking the boundaries of your lawn where grass meets pavement before the first freeze.
· Designate an area for excess snow. As you clear your walkways this will help ensure you’re not covering up your lawn even more.
· When using a snowplow, raise the blade 1-2 inches so there will not be damage to the grass blades that are not completely frozen.
· One important aspect to remember is never use sodium based ice-melters near your plants or lawn, as it is toxic. Consider using calcium chloride or sand.
