Pumpkin Decorating 101: From Traditional to Whimsical
It’s that time of year when the leaves are changing colors and floating to the ground, the grass is beginning to fade to brown, and the scents of wood burning and pumpkin pies cooling are wafting up your nostrils. For many, there’s no better time than this time of year.
Speaking of pumpkin pies, have you selected your perfectly sized, shaped and shade of color pumpkins to decorate your home or put out to greet trick-or-treaters? Pumpkins are a great way to bring out the natural magic of fall.
Consider these five ways to decorate with pumpkins this fall:
Carve a Masterpiece
Halloween is not complete without a smiling or spooky jack-o’-lantern. This timeless Halloween tradition décor is fun for the whole family and allows everyone to add their own twists! These tips will ensure that your carving and decorating goes smoothly. (1.) Successful pumpkin carving starts right from the beginning by choosing the right pumpkin. From the patch, choose one that is fresh, does not have any bruises and is flat on the bottom to prevent rolling. (2.) Using a serrated knife, cut a hole around the top. (3.) Scoop out all the flesh, pulp and seeds using a spoon, ice cream scooper, scraper, or even your hand! (4.) Choose a design and transfer it on to the pumpkin. Cut out your design, tape it to the pumpkin, and then trace or poke holes around the edge of the design so you know exactly where to cut. Check out these fun templates to download. (5.) Remove your template and cut out the design using a mini saw or knife. (6.) Finally, add a small tea light candle inside your pumpkin to illuminate your design. (7.) To prevent your pumpkin fresh, add petroleum jelly on the cut edges to lock in moisture. (8.) Want to spice things up? Sprinkle a little cinnamon on the inside of your lid, so when the candle is lit, your jack-o’-lantern will smell yummy!
Embellish Your Front Porch
Add a little rustic flair to your front porch by adorning it with fall’s favorite decoration - pumpkins! Fill a large tray or box with your favorite flowers, pinecones and small pumpkins and set it on your patio table. Utilize your wall space and hang a seasonal, pumpkin garland around window frames, railings or your front door. Fall wreaths are our favorite, and adding one to your front door will be perfect for welcoming guests. Finally, line your steps with larger pumpkins. Your autumn inspired front porch will be eye-catching and one your guests will love.
Direct Your Guests
Having a fall party or feast? Create tiny pumpkin place cards for each place setting at your special event. Using twine or rope, attach paper tags with each guests name. You can also write their names directly on the pumpkin with permanent marker to indicate seating placement.
Exercise Your Creativity
Painting a pumpkin is a creative way to decorate for the holidays without the mess of making a jack-o’-lantern. You can create beautiful designs with a wide range of colors. Here are our ideas. (1.) Stripes are always in, and are the perfect way to spruce up your home with some chic pumpkins. Use tape to ensure straight lines and fall colors to match your décor. (2.) Let your kids get creative and paint a spooky or silly face on the front of their pumpkin and display on your front porch next to the jack-o’-lanterns. (3.) Paint fun patterns and shapes on your pumpkin as an artful display. (4.) To add a little sparkle, include some embellishments on your pumpkin.
Create a Flower Arrangement
Cut off the top of a medium or large sized pumpkin to make a flower vase. Carve out the center and make sure to scrape out all the seeds and filling. Place a vase inside, fill it with water and arrange your favorite combination of flowers, acorns, pinecones, leaves, and branches for a beautiful centerpiece or flower arrangement in your home.
